Get Motivated

Every one of us experiences off days and times where we’re simply not in the mood to do something. Maybe it’s because the task at hand is difficult, perhaps it’s something we dread, or maybe we’re pinned underneath pressing personal matters. Rather than wait or hope these hindrances to your creativity will disappear, you can get out from under these “wet blankets” with some simple tips:

1. Divide and Conquer. It’s easy to become overwhelmed when you have a large project to finish. Rather than focusing on the entire project, break it into smaller sections that are manageable for you. This will give you clearer focus and help you feel less resistant to the work while making progress toward the end result. Best of all, as you complete each phase you’ll be rewarded with a sense of achievement each time.

2. Allow Yourself Ample Time. Sometimes we make the mistake of thinking we can finish a project in less time than is actually possible. There are days that you’re simply not able to perform 100%, and it’s called being human. If you find yourself working more slowly than you’d like, rather than becoming discouraged, accept that you need more time and work at a comfortable pace.

 3. Visualize the Goal. Envision yourself as having already completed the goal and imagine the feelings of satisfaction and the benefits it will produce.

4. Make it Enjoyable. Even the most boring tasks can be made more enjoyable when you play your favorite music or change your environment. Making alterations to your routine can inspire creativity. If you have a best friend or significant other that can help you conquer the task, do so together. That second person may have some great suggestions to make the outcome even better.

5. Take Care of Yourself. The body and mind depend on proper nutrition and hydration. Make healthy food choices that are nutrient-dense and will provide important vitamins and minerals. Likewise, drink plenty of water and steer clear of foods and beverages that have lots of sugar or refined carbohydrates. Also, exercise releases endorphins, the “feel good” hormones, which can increase energy levels, reduce pain, and improve focus.

Small tweaks to your approach and mindset can help unleash creativity. If you find you’re routinely struggling with overcoming a creative slump, consider taking a long break (give yourself permission to do this!) so you can disconnect from daily stress and obligations and return refreshed.
