Why Adults Doodle

The Coloring Craze With Health Benefits

We all remember being little kids at an art table, crayons in hand and creation at our fingertips. We’d spend endless hours creating without a care in the world. As adulthood emerged, it seemed the art of doodling was lost - until now. Surely you’ve seen the recent outbreak of coloring books solely for grownups. These coloring books have an intriguing collection of designs and patterns that invite you to get lost in the endless twisting and turning of lines; and we can’t get enough of it.

Calming the Mind. Coloring allows you to reap some amazing health benefits. That majestic sunset you doodled on paper? That floral design you turned into a colorful aura? All of that is actually calming the mind. It allows you to take a mental break from what’s around you and focus solely on the thing you are creating. You’re bringing about a meditative state that fosters a positive mindset and happier body.

Technology Break. Technology is a great thing! And…it’s a terrible thing. With too much technology, we become overstimulated with all the digital things at our fingertips. Without knowing it, we’re inviting stress, mind fogginess, and malaise. That’s where creativity comes into play. When you take a departure from your smart phone and create something, you’re saying no to that spiral of electronic media. Disconnecting from technology has proven to be beneficial to our health, especially to our state of mind. Creative drawing and focused doodling allow us to relax, get our minds straight, and live unchained to our devices; even if it is only momentary.

Brain Power. The act of coloring is good for the brain. The entire process — imagining colors, filling in lines, observing the drawing take on new life — fires up neurons that re-train your brain. The act of drawing helps regulate brain circuits, controlling your mood, thinking and perception.

So whether you’re doodling works of art or simply letting the colors soar from your heart onto a coloring page, you can rest assured you’ll be reaping the benefits that art and creativity have to offer!
